I am constantly amazed by the number of people who believe that they have to subscribe to Sky to receive UK TV services such as BBC and ITV.
So here’s how you can get all the leading UK TV channels, including Freesat HD services from BBC ITV, C4, Film4 and 5 for a one-off payment and forget the cost of a monthly subscription.
How to get Irish and UK Channels for less than €50
The cheapest and most convenient way to get both Saorview and Freesat channels is with the so-called Combi box. These receivers allow you to tune in digital terrestrial TV such as Saorview and satellite TV on the one set-top box.
This is a very convenient setup and if you are willing to pay more you can get a Combi box with a hard drive to record programmes.
However, the big disadvantage of Combi boxes is that they do not have the Freesat Electronic Programme Guide (EPG). That means that scheduling TV recordings can only be done manually and there is no series link to record your favourite shows.
A box to rival the Sky+ HD Box
If you’re willing to splash out €300, then you should consider the Humax HDR Freesat+ HD Box which replaces the wonderful Humax Foxsat HDR which I wrote about earlier and can still be bought from Amazon and E-Bay for about €100 less than the 1000S.
The Humax HDR-1000S Freesat+ HD Box rivals the impressive Sky+ HD box and has all the features you would ever want, including access to 150 Freesat TV and radio stations and an 8-day EPG with series link
The box also has Catch-up TV such as BBC iPlayer and ITV Player, but these are only available to viewers with a UK IP address. Irish viewers cannot access these services.
However, with a 1TB hard drive for hundreds of hours of recording, and a twin-tuner, so you can record one channel while watching another, this is not a feature you are likely to miss.
If you are not bothered with the recording features or working on a tighter budget, then you can buy a Freesat HD box for less than €80, giving you access to all the key Freesat features.
Remember you still need to have your Saorview TV connected to an aerial to receive Irish TV channels when using any of the Freesat set-top boxes.
Sure, Sky TV offers an unrivalled service to sports fans with all the best soccer, rugby, golf and tennis every week of the year and now with On Demand and Catch-up TV services for all your favourite shows.
And the new SkyGo service, which allows you watch Sky Sports, and some other Sky channels, on your laptop, tablet or mobile, is impressive.
But unless you are a sports fan, then changing over to Freesat, saving you one monthly bill, makes perfect sense.
