Westport Woods Greenest Hotel in Ireland

The Westport Woods Hotel, Westport, Co. Mayo, has been declared the Greenest Hotel in Ireland by The Green Hospitality Programme, which assists the hospitality sector become more environmentally responsible.

Westport Woods Hotel are named the number 1 Green Hotel in Ireland by Green Hospitality at the Responsible Tourism Conference 2014. The Westport Woods took the honours among the top ten Green Hotels, at the ‘Responsible Tourism Conference’ which took place in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Golden Lane in Dublin on Wednesday.

Based on 2013 environmental benchmark figures produced by hotels, The Green Hospitality Programme has produced its first league table listing for the Greenest Hotels In Ireland, based on what Irish hotels are doing to reduce their environmental footprint. Benchmarks for waste, energy water and carbon footprint were considered.

Coming out on top was The Westport Woods Hotel, which was one of the first hotels to join the Programme in 2004. The hotel has been actively involved in reducing its environmental footprint ever since and has exceeded its goals.

The Westport Woods Hotel was rated the number one hotel in the Waste Management category and number one in the CO2 Management category.

This was achieved by placing a huge focus on energy awareness, building design for efficiency and the use of biomass to provide heating for pool and hotel.

Michael Lennon from The Westport Hotel said: “For the last 10 years we have sought out ideas and technologies which make our hotel more efficient. Efficiency and customer comfort is a way of life at the Westport Woods Hotel.”

Castle Court Hotel ranked highly

Another top Mayo hotel ranked highly in the top ten list, the Castle Court Hotel, Westport who came in at number six.

Anne Corcoran, Owner of the Castle Court Hotel speaking after the announcement of the awards commented: “We are absolutely delighted to receive this award. It is a huge honour for us as the whole team led by Pat Smith have worked extremely hard to achieve this.”

Green Hospitality is one of the flagship programmes of the National Waste Prevention Programme. It is the only Irish developed environmental certification standard for the hospitality sector.
