Ballina Athletic Club is celebrating the news that funding of €58,824 has been approved for the resurfacing of the existing running track.
It is hoped that the funding boost is first step along the road to the athletic track at Belleek Park becoming a regional centre for the West of Ireland.
The funding was announced by Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring TD who has called on Ballina Town Council to support the development of a regional athletic centre in Ballina by providing further funding to progress this project.
Ballina Athletic Club has thanked Minister of State Ring for his help and the club has also confirmed that Ballina Town Council has indicated that they will take the proposal under consideration to further supplement funding.
Said a spokesperson for Ballina Athletic Club: “The Ballina Athletic Club has a large number of juvenile and adult members who use the facility for recreational and competitive training.
“Ballina fit4life has encouraged a rejuvenation of recreational running for adults in the area since its inception in 2009.
“The club has seen a growth in membership of 150% in the past few years. This funding allocation is a testament to the future of athletics for the North Mayo area.”
