Belmullet Senior National School has been awarded their third Green Flag for their efforts in promoting a greener environment.
One of the key success factors of Ireland’s Green Schools programme is that it is themed. Schools applying for their first Green Flag must complete seven steps in relation to the theme Litter and Waste.
If they succeed, they are awarded their Green Flag and then they can move onto completing the seven steps in relation to the second theme, which is Energy, and so on.
The subsequent themes are: water, travel, biodiversity, and global citizenship – litter and waste.
The use of themes helps to prevent schools from trying to deal with every aspect of their environment at once, which could be overwhelming.
Furthermore, it allows schools to build on their experience, expertise and best practice, as they work from theme to theme.
Well done to Belmullet Senior National School for this amazing achievement.
