Taoiseach Enda Kenny has visited the Sacred Heart Hospital in Castlebar to announce details of an €11 million investment in the Mayo care facility.
This follows on from the inclusion of the hospital in the HSE Capital Plan for 2014 with an allocation of €11 million in funding to secure its future and bring the facility in line with HIQA standards ensuring the best standards for patients.
The project plan for the hospital is now completed and notice will be issued by the end of January to the design consultants to invite them to submit tenders for the required design services.
Overall, the project involves the refurbishment and extension to 3 long-stay wards, as well as a rehabilitation ward.
Secures the future of the 150 jobs at Sacred Heart Hospital
Taoiseach Kenny said: “The Sacred Heart Hospital is hugely important to the people of Castlebar and beyond, and I was delighted to announce the provision of €11 million in funding last summer.
“This will both ensure the exceptional level of care for patients will continue and secure the future of the 150 jobs based there. A further benefit will be the employment created by the refurbishment and extension works.
“It is expected that following the assessment of the tender submissions received, a design team for the project will be appointed by the end of March 2014.”
