Mayo County Council’s Arts Office has launched IGNITE! – a new and innovative approach to commissioning and touring work by artists with disabilities.
Ignite! is managed through a unique partnership involving Mayo County Council Arts Office, The Arts Council/ An Chomhairle Ealaíon, Arts & Disability Ireland, Cork City Council and Galway City and County Councils.
Ignite! was established at the end of 2012, following on from the Arts & Disability Network, a capacity-building programme initiated by
The Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon in 2008 and piloted with Mayo County Council Arts Office and Arts and Disability Ireland (ADI) in 2009/2010.
The Ignite! Programme provides exceptional opportunities for local arts organisations and disability organisations to work with internationally recognised artists with disabilities to create new artworks.
Through promoting new, ambitious work by artists with disabilities, the Ignite! Programme intends to broaden the audience for this kind of work and to provide more diverse work for local audiences.
The official launch at the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar was attended by a vibrant audience of local artists, arts organisations, disability organisations and people with disabilities attended this information clinic.
Inspiring presentations were given by a range of speakers including Padraig Naughton (Director of Arts & Disability Ireland), Jo Verrent (a commissioner/curator for the Unlimited Cultural Olympiad Festival), Rachel Gadsden (visual artist) and Claire Cunningham (dancer) who had both received Unlimited commissions.
Ignite! commissions aim to support contemporary cutting-edge arts and disability work, through funding the creation of new work. Commissions are open to all art forms.
Ignite! is particularly interested in proposals focused on collaborative practice and will welcome proposals that also partner with arts and disability, and disability groups or organisations locally.
There are three commissions in total, one in each county (Mayo, Cork, and Galway).
