Lego, the colourful interlocking toy building bricks, that have brought so much fun to generations of children is enjoying a new lease of life worldwide.
The Lego Movie is taking the cinema world by storm and, here in Mayo, a team representing St. Gerald’s Secondary School in Castlebar has been crowned champions of the 8th annual SAP FIRST LEGO League challenge in Galway.
The global theme for this year’s competition, “Nature’s Fury”, was topical for Irish students and many of the projects were inspired by the recent disastrous impact of the weather in local communities.
The winners, SGC Robotics, will now go on to represent Ireland at the European finals of the competition in Spain in May.
Bernard Kirk, Director, The Galway Education Centre who brought the FIRST LEGO League to Ireland 8 years ago and have hosted it every year since, commented: “We see these students not just as LEGO and robotics experts, they are architects, engineers, and genuine enthusiasts. Irish students have become recognised all over the world through their successes in this competition at the global level and we are extremely proud of them and their teachers.”
